Middle school math students tessellate

The 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students have been learning how to do tessellations in math. Tessellations are something that you can repeat on and on with out any gaps or space in between them. This is kind of like a patterning that you use with wallpaper, cells that are in the body, and other kinds of things like shapes. There are three different kinds of tessellation. The first one is regular tessellation, which is made up of congruent polygons. The second one is semi-regular tessellations, which are made up of two or more polygons. The last one is non-regular tessellations; this is when you use translations, reflection, and rotation. Lastly, tessellations are important because if things weren’t able to tessellate, they wouldn’t look as nice as they do. – Jalia M.

School House Rock a success!

Recently, there was a fundraiser held for Cornerstone Schools of Alabama called School House Rock. It took place at BNA Warehouse in Birmingham. It’s a fundraiser that helps benefit Cornerstone’s scholarship funds. It originated five years ago with the Junior Board, who host it with Ms. India Bailey and Ms. Sarah Pikal. I think this was a good fundraiser to help Cornerstone and all of its students. – Christina H.

Photo of the Day

This is a picture that focuses on Palm Sunday which is coming up this week on Sunday, March 28,2010. This is to recognize the day when Jesus entered into Jerusalem on a never-before ridden donkey the week before his death and resurrection. It is called Palm Sunday because when Jesus entered into Jerusalem, the people greeted him by waving palm branches and by covering his path with palm branches. For many Christian churches, Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, which lasts all the way until Easter Day. – Monique F.

Interview of the Week

A new feature of the Cornerstone Eagle-Gazette will be the “Interview of the Week.” Yesterday Ariel sat down to talk with Mrs. Whitehead, the middle school math teacher. We hope you enjoy!

Q:  Why do you love to teach?

A:  Because I like working with kids and the excitement of learning.

Q:  How long have you been a teacher?

A:  Two years.

Q:  Do you plan to teach for the rest of your life?

A:  Yes!

Q:  What is the hardest part of your job?

A:  Both helping the kids stay motivated and staying motivated myself.

Q:  What was your job before you were a teacher?

A:  I was an accountant.

Q:  Why did you change jobs?

A:  Because I have wanted to be a teacher since I was in the 7th grade and now I’m following the dream!

And we’re back!

After taking a brief pause for spring break, the Cornerstone Eagle-Gazette staff will soon be returning to their blogging. Keep up with all CSA news and views right here. We’d also like to thank our first guest blogger, Dr. Nita Thompson, who kept us up-to-date on her trip to Egypt. If you have any questions or comments for her or the staff, feel free to leave them right here on the blog! We’d love to hear from you. – Mr. Ard

The Palace

Here is a picture of the palace!

Alexandria, Egypt

Dear Wonderful Students,

I traveled from Cairo to Alexandria.  It took about 3 hours across the desert to arrive.  We toured the City.  The City is famous for the great library that has ancient documents.  We went to see Prince Fuad’s palace.  He was the last King of Egypt.  Alexandria is on the Mediterranean Sea and is beautiful.

I will see you after Spring Break.  I cannot wait!  I have missed all of you!

Love in Christ,

Dr. Thompson

In the lunchroom

Hello Everyone,
I wanted you to see the food they have in the lunchroom at Sunrise. The plate is stainless steel. For breakfast I had cottage cheese, french fries, salad, okra and fresh orange juice. I am sitting at a student table.
Love you!

More Pictures of Sunrise School
